KURDISTAN: Kurdistan democratic confederalists

With a population of 30 million, the Kurds are the world’s largest stateless people. They form the majority of Kurdistan, a region in Turkey, Iran, Syria and Iraq. Since 1999, their struggle for self-determination has taken an anarchstic turn, and communities in Kurdistan have established direct democratic governance modelled on the anti-authoritarian neo-Zapatista movement and the theories of US anarchist Murray Bookchin. While Kurds comprise the majority, the movement has been diverse and multi-ethnic. For example, in the canton of Jazira in Rojava (Syrian Kurdistan), Kurds, Arabs, Syriacs, Chechens, Armenians, Muslims, Christians and Yazidis co-exist and share political power.^[1]

Interview with the Kurdistan Anarchists Forum (KAF) about the situation in Iraq/Kurdistan

ALB: How are you now ?

We are fine but like many of you extremely concerned about the current situation in Iraq in general and the Iraqi part of Kurdistan in particular. We are very active in the social media with respect to writing, making comments and discussing the current crisis that exists with different people and groups.

The struggle for Kobane: an example of selective solidarity

The heroic resistance of the people of Kobane in fighting the onslaught of the Daesh (ISIS) fascists since mid-September, has led to a surge of international solidarity. A multitude of articles and statements have been written and protests have been held in cities across the world. Kurds have flooded across the Turkish border to help their compatriots in the fight despite being brutally pushed back by Turkish forces, and others including Turkish comrades from DAF (Revolutionary Anarchist Action) have gone to the border to support in keeping it open to help the flood of refugees escaping to Turkey. There have been calls to arm Kurdish forces and calls to support DAF and send aid for refugees.  Yet this solidarity with Syria’s Kurds has not been extended to non-Kurdish groups in the country that have been fighting, and dying, to rid themselves of fascism and violent repression and for freedom and self-determination. It’s often said incorrectly, that sectarianism lies at the heart of the Syrian conflict. It’s necessary to understand to what extent sectarianism plays a role in our response too.

IRAQ: The possibility of breaking up Iraq

A few weeks ago, in one of our bulletins, we (the Kurdistan Anarchists Forum) expressed our opinions and attitudes regarding the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis), its attacks on Iraq, and the religious and political struggle between the Shia and Sunni for domination. An interesting report by Zaher Baher of Haringey Solidarity Group and Kurdistan Anarchists Forum who spent two weeks in Syrian Kurdistan, looking at the experiences of self-government in the region 

What you read below is the experience of my visit, for a couple of weeks in May this year, 2014, to North East of Syria or Syrian Kurdistan (West of Kurdistan) with a close friend of mine.

Throughout the visit we had the total freedom and opportunity to see and speak to whoever we wanted to. This includes women, men, youth, and the political parties. There are over 20 parties from Kurdish to Christian, of which some are in the Democratic Self Administration (DSA) or Democratic Self Management (DSM) of the region of Al Jazera. Al Jazera is one of three regions, (cantons) of West Kurdistan. We also met the Kurdish and Christian political parties who are not in the DSA or DSM. In addition, we met the top people from the Democratic Self Administration (DSM), members of the different committees, local groups and communes as well as businesspeople, shopkeepers, workers, people in the market and people who were just walking in the street.

لا شك في وجود شيء من الحقيقة في عتبكم علينا أيها الرفاق .. نعم , نحن لم نشجب بما يكفي ما فعله المسلحون الإسلاميون بأكراد سوريا و أخيرا بإيزيديي شنكال , و قبلهم بمسيحيي الموصل , أو أننا فعلنا أقل بكثير مما يجب .. كان احتجاجنا , و سائر نضالاتنا , ضد هذه المجازر أقل بكثير من مستوى همجيتها , نحن الذين يفترض أن نرفض بكل حزم أي انتهاك يمارسه مجرمون يملكون السلاح و ما يكفي من الوقاحة لمعاقبة بشر عاديين لمجرد أنهم ولدوا مختلفين .. الحقيقة أن داعش و ما يشبهها ليست فقط خطرا على كل من يختلف عن نظرتها المغلقة جدا للبشر , إنها أيضا خطر داهم على كل تفكير مستقل , على كل من يريد أن يعيش و يفكر بحرية , و يريد أن يحلم بحرية .. تدفعنا الحرب بعيدا , و يجرفنا الدم و الكراهية بعيدا ليس فقط عن إنسانيتنا , بل مباشرة نحو فخ السادة أو من يحلمون بأن يصبحوا سادة , فنحشر جميعا في تعميمات و توصيفات نمطية يسقطها الجميع على “خصومهم” , ناسبين إليهم صفات متأصلة “شريرة” أو “متخلفة” , أو “لا أخلاقية” الخ , بحيث يحصل الفقراء على ما يكفي من “مبررات” , و من “كراهية” , ليموتوا و ليقتلوا فقراء مثلهم في سبيل السادة , أو من يطمحون للعب دور السادة .. إننا كأناركيين , بقدر ما نؤمن و ندافع عن العنف الذي يمارسه المضطهدون ليحرروا أنفسهم , فإننا نرفض بكل قوة العنف الذي يمارسه المضطهدون ضد بعضهم البعض دفاعا عن السادة , أو لتغيير سيد بآخر .. لا يمكن أبدا , اعتبار حصار داعش للكرد السوريين , و مهاجمتهم مرارا , و ارتكاب المجازر ضدهم , و أخيرا تهجير الإيزيديين و قتلهم بدم بارد , لا يمكن أبدا تفسيره أو تبريره إلا على أنها جرائم نفذها مهووسون بالسلطة لدرجة القتل ضد بشر كل ذنبهم أنهم ولدوا مختلفين .. يمكنكم أن تكونوا واثقين أيها الرفاق , و معكم كل كردي في سوريا و العراق و كل مكان , كل أمازيغي و آشوري و كلداني الخ , و كل مضطهد في منطقتنا و العالم , أننا لم نتنكر لأفكارنا و لمبادئنا , لإيماننا بحريتكم و حريتهم جميعا كما بحريتنا , و حرية كل إنسان على هذه الأرض ..

الرفاق الاعزاء بالحركة الاناركية الكرديه
وصلنا عتابكم لنا على تأخرنا في اصدار بيان تضامن مع الشعب الكردي والأقليات بشمال العراق وسوريه والتي تتعرض لهجمة وحشية مخيفه من التنظيم الفاشي المعادي للبشر المسمى (الدوله الإسلاميه بالعراق والشام)، ولعل لكم كل الحق في ذلك العتاب، فقد كنتم دائما سباقين في دعمنا والتواصل معنا كحركة أناركية بمصر، لكن ما منعنا من أصدار مثل ذلك البيان هو شعورنا بعجز الكلمات وتقزمها أمام ما تتعرضون له كشعب وما تتعرض له أقليات شمال العراق وسوريه، فكل ما تعرضنا له من مضايقات لا يساوي شيئا مقارنة بالهول المخيف الذي تتعرضون له، أي بيان يمكننا ان نصدر؟ وأي كلمات يمكنها ان تعبر عما في نفوسنا من غضب وحزن وألم؟ إن بيانات التضامن والإدانه لم تعد تعني شيئا، ولن نقزم مأساتكم بإصدار مجرد بيان إدانة وتضامن، إننا ندرك تماما ان الانتفاضات الشعبية التي سميت (الربيع العربي) على ما شابها من قصور في الوعي وضحالة في الأهداف والأليات كانت زلزالا ارعب ليس فقط الأنظمة الديكتاتورية العميله بالمنطقه، بل اصاب بالذعر القوى الإمبرياليه السلطويه بالعالم كله وهم يشاهدون عدوى تلك الأنتفاضات تنتقل لبلدانهم في الولايات المتحده واليونان وأسبانيا وتركيا وغيرها، كما اصابت تلك الانتفاضات القوى الرجعيه المحليه العميله بالفزع وهددت بعصر جديد تستيقظ فيه الشعوب وتنهض لتأخذ زمام المبادرة بنفسها دون إتكال على حزب أو تنظيم سلطوي، فكان ان سلطت الرأسمالية العالميه سلاحها القديم المجرب جيدا (الفاشيه الدينيه) لتجعلها السلاح الذي يدمر تلك الانتفاضات الشعبيه ويخرجها عن مسارها ويحطم أي امل او طموح لها ويحولها لمطية لوصول تلك الفاشيات للحكم كبديل للفاشيات القوميه والوطنيه التي أهلكتها الشيخوخة والفساد، إن الكيان الإجرامي المسمى (داعش) ليس سوى إعادة إنتاج لكل بشاعة النازيه الهتلريه في ممارسته للتطهير العرقي والمذابح الجماعيه، ذلك الكيان المعادي للبشريه الذي أستخدم لتحطيم الثوره الشعبيه السوريه والقضاء على أي امل لتحرك ثوري شعبي بالعراق، يقوم الان بتدمير شعوب المنطقه نفسها، ماديا ومعنويا عبر المذابح والإباده الجماعيه، متسلطا على الأكراد والمسيحيين واليزيديين وكل الأقليات العرقيه والدينيه بقدر ما يتسلط على الأغلبيه العربيه السنيه مدمرا اياها ومخضعا لها لرؤيته الشيطانيه للعالم
