GREECE/SYRIA: Statement by SRSB in solidarity with struggle against dumping of chemical weapons in the Mediterranean sea

Protests in Crete continue against the destruction of the Syrian regime’s chemical weapons in the Mediterranean sea. The United States, Russia and the United Nations wanted to get rid of the Syrian regime’s chemical weapons and did not mind turning the Mediterranean sea into a waste dump for toxic agents.
The process of burying the Syrian regime’s chemical weapons in international waters between Malta, Greece and Italy has already begun, but local communities are not watching this idly.
On 23 March, almost 10,000 Cretans rallied in the tiny village of Arkadi against the plan to dump the chemical weapons in the Mediterranean.  An international online petition has been issued to demand a a halt to process that poses catastrophic ramifications on the marine ecosystem.  On 25 July, a flotilla of three boats carrying about 30 fishermen, activists and scientists attempted to sail to prevent the destruction of the chemical weapons aboard the US vessel MV Cape Ray. The flotilla, however, was derailed by bad weather and high waves. Protests took place in Italy, too. Some of the Majors of Gioia Tauro protested outside the parliament against the arrival of chemical weapons in their port. Activists from Crete said: “If you don’t fight you won’t achieve anything. If you fight, you might achieve something.” And now more than ever, it’s our duty to support their fight and reject the destruction of Assad’s weapons in our sea.

Support the people of Crete; oppose dumping Assad’s chemical weapons in the Mediterranean

21 August marks the first anniversary of the Syrian regime’s chemical attacks on Eastern Ghouta in the suburbs of Damascus. Within hours, 1450 people, including many children, were killed. Not only have world powers rewarded the massacre’s perpetrators with impunity; they seem to pay no heed to the disastrous environmental consequences posed by the disposal of the Syrian regime’s chemical weapons.
Thus, as Syrians and supporters of the Syrian revolution, we express solidarity with the struggle to prevent the disposal of the Syrian regime’s chemical weapons in the Mediterranean sea between Greece, Malta and Italy.

The destruction of 800 tons of chemical weapons on the US ship MV Cape Ray will potentially cause massive and irreversible damage to marine ecosystems and also threatens public health and local communities. Experts have already questioned the effectiveness of the proposed Hydrolysis method for neutralising chemical agents such as Sarin and Mustard gas and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has failed to explore alternative options for neutralisation and disposal.

We support the dismantling of the Assad regime’s chemical weapons programme, but we also believe this should not be done at the expense of local communities and in a manner that disregards the environment and public health. The decision to force the Syrian regime to get rid of its chemical weapons was taken to save the blushes and interests of imperialist powers rather than saving the Syrian people.
Tens of thousands of Syrians have been killed by the use of conventional weapons since 21 August 2013 and this largely goes unnoticed.

As the decisions of world powers in different countries impact upon people from different communities across the globe, we believe that resistance must also be globalised. We are inspired by the people of Crete’s blockade against the NATO base in Souda, the courageous actions of the protest flotilla and fishermen, and the popular mobilisation and protests planned to take place across the country. We support the call of the coordinating assemblies for the immediate cessation of the hydrolysis experiment.
The struggle for freedom, dignity and social justice in Syria cannot be separated from your struggle for environmental and social justice, public health and safe community life.

Επιστολή εναντίον της απόρριψης των χημικών όπλων και αλληλεγγύης στις διαδηλώσεις στην Κρήτη

Ο Αύγουστος σηματοδοτεί την πρώτη επέτειο από τις επιθέσεις του συριακού καθεστώτος με χημικά όπλα στην ανατολική Ghouta στα προάστια της Δαμασκού. Μέσα σε λίγες ώρες, 1450 άνθρωποι, κυρίως παιδιά, σκοτώθηκαν. Οι παγκόσμιες δυνάμεις όχι μόνο επιβράβευσαν του δράστες της σφαγής με ατιμωρησία, αλλά δε δείχνουν κανένα ενδιαφέρον για τις καταστροφικές περιβαλλοντικές επιπτώσεις, εξαιτίας της απόρριψης των χημικών όπλων του συριακού καθεστώτος.
Συνεπώς, ως Σύριοι και υποστηρικτές της συριακής επανάστασης, εκφράζουμε την αλληλεγγύη μας στον αγώνα για την παρεμπόδιση της απόρριψης των χημικών όπλων του συριακού καθεστώτος στη Μεσόγειο ανάμεσα στην Ελλάδα, τη Μάλτα και την Ιταλία.
Η καταστροφή 800 τόνων χημικών όπλων στο αμερικανικό πλοίο MV Cape Ray ενδέχεται να προκαλέσει μαζική και μη αναστρέψιμη ζημιά στα θαλάσσια οικοσυστήματα κι επίσης απειλεί τη δημόσια υγεία και τις τοπικές κοινότητες. Ειδικοί έχουν ήδη αμφισβητήσει την αποτελεσματικότητα της προταθείσας μεθόδου υδρόλυσης για την εξουδετέρωση χημικών ουσιών, όπως το Σαρίν και τα αέρια μουστάρδας, και ο Οργανισμός για την Απαγόρευση των Χημικών Όπλων (OPCW) έχει αποτύχει να εξερευνήσει εναλλακτικές επιλογές για την εξουδετέρωση και απόρριψη.
Υποστηρίζουμε τον τερματισμό του προγράμματος χημικών όπλων του καθεστώτος Άσαντ, αλλά επίσης πιστεύουμε ότι αυτό δεν μπορεί να γίνει σε βάρος των τοπικών κοινοτήτων και κατά τρόπο που αδιαφορεί για το περιβάλλον και τη δημόσια υγεία.. Η απόφαση να εξαναγκαστεί το συριακό καθεστώς να ξεφορτωθεί τα χημικά όπλα πάρθηκε για να διασωθούν τα συμφέροντα των ιμπεριαλιστικών δυνάμεων και να προστατευτεί η φήμη τους, και όχι οι Σύριοι. Δεκάδες χιλιάδες Σύριοι έχουν σκοτωθεί από τη χρήση συμβατικών όπλων από τις 21 Αυγούστου 2013 και το γεγονός αυτό έχει σε μεγάλο βαθμό περάσει απαρατήρητο.
Καθώς οι αποφάσεις των παγκόσμιων δυνάμεων σε διαφορετικές χώρες έχουν αντίκτυπο σε ανθρώπους από διαφορετικές κοινότητες σε όλο τον κόσμο, πιστεύουμε ότι και η αντίσταση πρέπει να παγκοσμιοποιηθεί. Εμπνεόμαστε από τον αποκλεισμό της ναυτικής βάσης του ΝΑΤΟ στη Σούδα από τους Κρητικούς, τις θαρραλέες ενέργειες του στολίσκου διαμαρτυρίας και των ψαράδων και τη λαϊκή κινητοποίηση και τις διαδηλώσεις που προγραμματίζονται να λάβουν χώρα σε όλη την Ελλάδα. Υποστηρίζουμε το κάλεσμα των συντονιστικών συνελεύσεων για άμεσο τερματισμό του πειράματος υδρόλυσης.
Ο αγώνας για ελευθερία, αξιοπρέπεια και κοινωνική δικαιοσύνη στη Συρία δεν μπορεί να διαχωριστεί από το δικό σας αγώνα για περιβαλλοντική και κοινωνική δικαιοσύνη, δημόσια υγεία και ασφαλή κοινοτική ζωή.

في سعيها للتخلص من ترسانة النظام السوري الكيميائية، لم تأبه الولايات المتحدة وروسيا والأمم المتحدة بتحويل البحر الأبيض المتوسط إلى مكبٍّ لمئات الأطنان من الغازات السامة. وعلى الرغم من انطلاق عملية إتلاف أسلحة النظام الكيميائية في المياه الدولية بين اليونان ومالطا وإيطاليا فإن السكان المحليين لم يلتزموا الصمت إزاء ذلك.
ففي 23 آذار/مارس الماضي تظاهر الآلاف من سكان جزيرة كريت في قرية “أركادي” رفضاً للمخطط القاضي بإلقاء الأسلحة الكيميائية في المتوسط، وذلك بعد قيام نشطاء بيئيين وعلماء بإصدار عريضة تطالب بوقف العملية التي قد تعرّض المنظومة البحرية في المتوسط إلى أخطار كارثية.
في الخامس والعشرين من تموز/يوليو الماضي حاول أسطول يضم ثلاثة قوارب وحوالي ثلاثين صياداً وناشطاً وعالماً الإبحار لمنع الباخرة الأميركية “Cape Ray” من تدمير الأسلحة في المتوسط إلا أن الطقس السيء والأمواج العاتية أعاقت رحلتهم.
وقد شملت الاحتجاجات المناهضة لإلقاء السلاح الكيميائي إيطاليا أيضاً إذ تظاهر سكان منطقة “جيويا تاورو” الإيطالية أمام البرلمان، مطالبين بسخرية بإتلاف السلاح الكيميائي في البرلمان عوضاً عن إلقائه في مينائهم.
تشديداً على مواصلة نضالهم لمنع إلقاء الأسلحة الكيميائية في البحر، قال ناشطو كريت بعد تأجيل رحلتهم نتيجة سوء الطقس: “إن لم نحارب فسوف لن نحقق شيئاً، لكن فيما إذا تابعنا نضالنا هنالك إمكانية بتحقيق شيء ما”.
واليوم، نعلن مساندتنا لنضال شعوب المتوسط في سبيل منع إتلاف أسلحة النظام السوري الكيميائية، في مياه البحر الأبيض المتوسط، بحرنا.

نص الرسالة:

“دعماً لنضال سكان كريت
ورفضاً لإتلاف سلاح الأسد الكيميائي في البحر المتوسط”

يصادف يوم الحادي والعشرون من آب المقبل، الذكرى الأولى لهجوم النظام السوري على غوطة دمشق بالأسلحة الكيميائية، والذي أسفر عن استشهاد 1450 شخصاً منهم الكثير من الأطفال، خلال ساعات قليلة. لم تكتفِ الدول الكبرى بمكافأة النظام الذي ارتكب تلك المجزرة، بمنحه الحصانة، وزادت على ذلك انعدام وجود أي اكتراث فعلي بالمخاطر البيئية الوخيمة، التي قد يخلّفها إتلاف الأسلحة الكيميائية.
نحن أنصار الثورة السورية نعرب عن تضامننا مع النضال لمنع إلقاء سلاح النظام الكيميائي في البحر الأبيض المتوسط، بين كل من اليونان ومالطا وإيطاليا.
حيث أن تدمير 800 طن من الأسلحة الكيميائية على متن الباخرة الأميركية “Cape Ray”، يمكن أن يؤدي إلى أضرار جسيمة وغير محدودة على المنظومة البيئية البحرية، وعلى صحة وسلامة سكان تلك المنطقة من المتوسط.
وقد سبق أن شكك العديد من لخبراء بنجاعة الطريقة المسماة “التحليل المائي”، وهي الآلية المقترحة لتحييد آثار غازات مثل السارين والخردل، بيد أن منظمة حظر انتشار الأسلحة الكيميائية، فشلت في إيجاد آليّات بديلة للتخلص من ترسانة نظام الأسد الكيميائية.
وبينما ندعم تدمير كامل السلاح الكيميائي لنظام الأسد، نؤكد في الوقت عينه، على أن ذلك لا ينبغي أن يَحدث على حساب السكان المحليين، وبطريقة تتغاضى عن أسس السلامة البيئية والصحة العامة.
هذا ولم يعد خافيا على أحد من المعنيين بالقضية السورية، أن قرار إجبار النظام السوري على التخلّي عن برنامجه الكيميائي، لم يأتِ لحماية السوريين، بل لحماية مصالح القوى الإمبريالية وحفظ ماء وجهها، إذ أن عشرات الآلاف من السوريين والسوريات قتلوا منذ 21/8/2013 باستخدام الأسلحة التقليدية، الأمر الذي مر دائما كخبر عادي.
ولأن قرارات القوى العظمى، تؤثّر على مختلف شعوب العالم، فإننا نؤمن بضرورة “عولمةِ” مقاومتنا لهذه القوى وقراراتها، كما نستمدّ الإلهام من حصار سكّان جزيرة كريت لقاعدة الناتو العسكرية في “سودا”، ومن النشاطات الشجاعة التي تنظمها قافلة الصيادين الاحتجاجية، ومن فعاليات الحشد والاحتجاج الشعبية المزمَع إقامتها في جميع أنحاء اليونان، ونؤيد مطالب اللجان التنسيقية بالوقف الفوري لبرنامج التحليل المائي للأسلحة الكيميائية.
إن النضال من أجل الحرية والكرامة والعدالة الاجتماعية في سورية لا يمكن فصله عن نضال شعوبكم من أجل العدالة البيئية والاجتماعية والصحة العامة والحياة الآمنة.
