CATALONIA: Active Resistance Camp against development of the M.A.T.

2nd of September, 2013:

The active resistance camp against the MAT (very high tension electricity line) taking place near Girona has squatted a huge, antique, abandoned farmhouse near the village of Oriol, in order to give continuity to the struggle against this deadly project and the world which needs it. The resistance against the MAT has been active for more than a decade and has now reached a crucial point seeing that the construction of the line has now started in this area and is going ahead at a furious pace.

The police are constantly harassing the squatted zone and farmhouse. This is the squat’s fifth day and the second day since the doors were opened to anyone who wishes to contribute to the struggle against the MAT and intends to organize collectively in order to stop it. The liberated space, located very near to where two pylons are being constructed, is like sand in the gears and cogs of this machine of death and destruction driven by industrialists and politicians and defended by the police and journalists.

During the last week of August the police presence around the camp in Fellines and its activities was very strong: people stopped and identified, provocations, number plates written down, constant patrolling along the surrounding roads, protest marches blocked, a helicopter flying above the camp and hovering near it at low altitude, presumably taking photos, etc. However, the harassment did not stop the people who came from all over the surrounding areas, the Spanish State and other European countries, and even spurred them to intensify the struggle, as can be seen with this new squatted area which seems to have thrown the police off-balance.

On the 1st of September it was made public knowledge that the abandoned Mas Castelló farmhouse had been squatted as a new space of resistance and coordination, and soon enough the police arrived in great numbers, suddenly waking up to the fact that the action had taken place right under their noses and despite all their checkpoints. The barricades built along the dirt track leading to the house, the presence of many people behind them and some other resisters on the roof of the new squat, helped keep the police away, even though they tried to advance showing plastic bullet guns, firing a few shots into the air, perhaps bringing dogs to the scene, threatening and shouting and throwing rocks at the resisters in order to provoke them and thus create the legal situation necessary for a speedy eviction order.

Before nightfall, however, the forces of repression withdrew most of their faithful soldiers, only to come back a little later as a small group accompanying the owner of the house, shouting threats and trying to identify the people on the roof.

The night was quiet but this morning saw the arrival of many police vans yet again. Some of the barricades have been removed by firefighters and by a tractor which was probably ordered to do so by the owner of the house.

Some hours later most of the vans filed away and the resisters got back to the tasks necessary in order to make Mas Castelló a meeting point for locals and non-locals who will continue the struggle against this deadly megaproject.

Everyone is invited to come and participate to help defend the land around Girona. People are arriving but greater numbers are necessary, so come and show your support!

If you are unable to be physically present, express your solidarity in whichever way you see fit, wherever possible and as soon as possible.

Mas Castelló resists!

Girona, August 23 – Active Resistance Camp against development of the M.A.T. High Tension Electrical Network (Catalunya)

The very high tension line (‘Muy Alta Tensión’ – M.A.T.) is an electrical motorway which transports at least 400,000 volts. It is being constructed in order to connect European States to each other and also Europe with Africa. It is necessary in order to sell and distribute excess energy produced by nuclear power plants and the so-called alternative sources of energy. At the same time, it is the network which capitalism needs in order to supply the electricity necessary for other projects and infrastructures of death and destruction, such as high-speed railway lines [TAV]. Those responsible for all this are always the same ones and the construction companies in question are directly involved in other projects which are destroying lands around the world; companies like Vinci standing out in Europe and Endesa in South America.

So that the last decisive section for the connection between France and Catalonia can not be constructed. So that the energy coming from 6 French nuclear power plants does not cross this land or any other. So as to treat the struggle against the M.A.T. as a starting point for questioning our way of living, which is mainly imposed by the domination of Progress. So as to create on the affected land a space for meeting, information, agitation and action.

After more than 10 years of struggle, we are at a decisive moment. In September expropriations are expected to begin, directed against owners who have refused to sign the sale of land needed for the construction of the M.A.T.’s last pylons in Girona.

It is because of all of this that we are inviting you to participate actively in the camp, in order to share, struggle and resist in a self-run space, without leaders and representatives. We want to create moments of exchange and connection between various struggles, because the M.A.T. affects us all and is not an isolated struggle.

Bring everything that you need for camping.

First week of occupation

We are writing from the squatted mansion /Mas Castelló/, near to Orriols, Catalonia.

On the back of the energy and enthusiasm of the camp against the MAT that was held in Fellines, we have squatted a space to give the struggle against the MAT continuity, creating a meeting place here we can share experiences of struggles and collective living that breaks away from the models imposed on us by consumer society.

The list of struggles in defence of territory is long: businessmen and multinationals whose lack of responsibility knows no bounds try to build poisonous infrastructures, sacking the worlds remaining natural resources and irreparably destroying everything in thier path, in the name of profit and their insane idea of progress.

Over these weeks, from the beginning of the camp to the occupation, there have been discussions about the struggles against the High Speed Trains in Val de Susa (Italy) and Euskal Herria (Basque Country), against open-cast mining in Laciana, León, the macro-aiport at Notre-Dame de Landes, close to Nantes in Francia (ZAD), the THT (High Tension Power Lines in France) and the techno-nuclear system in Normandy, the gold mine in Rosia Montana (Romania), a battle which the population has just won following decades of struggle, the mobilisations against the oil companies that are sacking and destroying the Amazon, the High Tension Power Line in Valle d’Albaida (Valencia), the intent to devastate the mountains near to Thessaloniki in Greece, and the mobilisation in Granada, Andalucia, against the construction of a motorway ring-road.

Mas Castelló, which has been empty for many years and was completely abandoned, is a collective space where everyone can contribute what they want, from ideas and energies to desires and doubts. This squatting is not an end in itself, but a means to give new impulse to the struggle against the MAT, to connect with and participate in the struggles for the defence of other territories against these destructive macro-projects and the world and the society that sustains them and needs them.

We want to fill the house with life and energy, for there to be workshops and spaces to share practices and learn from each other, sharing skills and experiences, rebuilding the spaces as wee need them, and coming together to liberate our lives from the apathy imposed by obligations and codes that we have never wanted to follow.

We are excited to continue this project and we invite you to pass by the mansion and participate.

The house is for those who live it, respect it and share it, to strengthen our relations in a horizontal way, without hierarchies, leaders or representatives, forging stronger links and reactivating these struggles for territory with greater strength and courage.

“La casa è di chi l’abita
è un vile chi lo ignora
il tempo è dei filosofi
la terra è di chi la lavora.”
